Enjoy your vegetable garden with tomato plants from Horticentre
Growing tomatoes is a fun and rewarding task that yields fresh, delicious tomatoes. Tomatoes are easy to grow in any sunny spot with fertile soil or peat-free potting compost. Water them regularly and feed them weekly with high-potash fertilizer once they start flowering. Tomato plants come in two forms: determinate (bush) and indeterminate (cordon). Bush types are usually planted in growpots or hanging baskets while cordon varieties need plant support by bamboo canes, stakes, or trellises to help the plant grow tall without drooping over on themselves.
Growing tomatoes from seeds
To grow your own tomatoes in the UK, it is crucial to select the right variety suited to your climate and soil. Planting should be done in late spring or early summer when the weather is warm and sunny. Tomatoes thrive in well-drained, organic-rich soil and require plenty of sunlight. Regular care, including watering, feeding, pruning, and pest protection, is essential for a good harvest. Tomatoes can be grown indoors or outdoors, but the variable UK weather can pose challenges, making greenhouses or cloches beneficial for extending the growing season. The number of seeds you need depends on your garden size, the desired number of plants, and the seeds' germination rate. Generally, plant 2-3 times the number of seeds you need, with germination rates around 50-75%. For small gardens or containers, a few seeds may suffice, while larger gardens may require several dozen.
