For some growing vegetables is second nature, others might think growing your own vegetables is complicated. At Horticentre we know a lot about growing and harvesting delicious vegetables and we like to share our passion with you. We do this by selecting the best vegetable seeds and all the tools and products you need to successfully grow your own vegetable garden. 

Do I need a big garden to grow my own vegetables?

To enjoy homegrown organic vegetables you don’t need a big garden. You can plant vegetable seeds in pots on your balcony, patio or even windowsill. With the right care, herbs and even vegetables like tomatoes, aubergine and carrots can grow in a small space! 

Is it a lot of work to grow your own vegetables?

Another myth is that it is a lot of work to grow your own fresh vegetables. It doesn’t have to be! If you want to grow your own herbs to use while cooking and pick your own tomatoes, that is not a lot of complicated work. It’s fairly easy and with the right garden tools, growing media and some tender, love and care, you’ll be enjoying your own kitchen garden in no time!

What vegetable seeds should I choose?

First of all, the ones which you like best but keep in mind the kind of garden or outdoor space you have available and how much time you have to tend to your vegetables. For Seed potatoes you need different space then for onion and garlic or Edamame beans! So make a plan, see when the vegetable seeds of your liking need planting and harvesting and how much room and time it will take to successfully grow them into delicious vegetables!

Which types of seeds are good for your own produce?

When it comes to seeds, there are many options available. Fruit seeds include those for berries, stone fruits, and citrus fruits. Vegetable seeds include those for root vegetables, leafy greens, and brassicas. It's important to choose seeds that are appropriate for your climate and the growing season in your area. Here is a list of fruit and vegetables that you can grow in your home garden:

  • Tomatoes: Typically take about 75-90 days from transplant to harvest.
  • Peppers: Approximately 70-80 days from transplant to harvest.
  • Lettuce: 30-50 days from seed to harvest.
  • Carrots: Approximately 70-80 days from seed to harvest.
  • Radishes: Usually ready to harvest in 25-30 days.
  • Strawberries: Usually bear fruit the second year and continue producing for 2-3 weeks each year.
  • Blueberries: Typically take 2-3 years to produce fruit and can continue to produce for 10-20 years.
  • Raspberries: Usually bear fruit the second year and continue producing for 10-15 years.
  • Potatoes: Approximately 60-120 days from seed to harvest.
  • Squash: Approximately 50-70 days from seed to harvest.

The possible options for your own vegetable and fruit garden depend on the climate and conditions in your home garden. Naturally, we only sell seeds for produce able to grow in our climate.
