Why go Peat-free?

Recent studies have shown the negative environmental impact of peat extraction and as such many people are choosing to swap to Peat-Free compost as it still provides great results but without the harmful carbon footprint. Here at Horticentre in Wakefield we have increased our range of Peat-Free options to give our customers options across the growing spectrum.   

What is in Peat-free compost?

Wood-based materials, such as woodfibre, composted bark, sawdust, wood refuse, or paper waste, make up the majority of the ingredients in peat-free composts. Because wood-based mixes have good drainage and a low pH, they can be customised to meet the needs of most plants. Coir, or coconut fibre, is a good growing substrate because it naturally holds water very well and has a good balance of fine and coarse fibres to hold air in its pore spaces. The remainder of Peat Free compost is made up traditionally of Green Compost which is high in nutrients and adds key ingredients needed for healthy and happy plants.
