Dahlia

Timing is key when it comes to planting summer flowering bulbs like dahlias. Plant dahlia tubers in the spring, once the risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up, usually around late April to early May. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil for the best results. Dahlias typically begin to bloom in mid-to-late summer, with their dazzling flowers lasting until the first frost in autumn. This extended flowering period makes them a superb investment for long-lasting garden colour.

1. Preparation: Before planting, enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to provide the tubers with essential nutrients.
2. Planting Depth: Dig a hole about 10-15 cm deep and place the tuber horizontally with the "eye" (a small growth bud) facing upwards. Cover it with soil and water lightly.
3. Support: As dahlias grow tall, they may need support to prevent their stems from breaking. Insert stakes or canes at planting time to avoid disturbing the roots later.
4. Watering: Once established, water dahlias regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging the soil.
5. Feeding: Feed your plants every couple of weeks with a high-potash fertiliser to encourage abundant flowering.
6. Deadheading: Regularly remove spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering throughout the season.
